컬럼비아 MBA(Columbia Business School, CBS)는 뉴욕 맨해튼에 위치한 컬럼비아 대학교의 경영학 석사 과정입니다. 컬럼비아 경영대학원은 혁신과 발전을 추구함과 동시에 다양성, 기후변화, 포용 등의 가치를 지향하고 있습니다. CBS의 경우 2024년 U.S News 기준 미국 Full-Time MBA 랭킹에서 공동 12위를 기록하고 있지만, 뉴욕에 위치한 부동의 M7 MBA라는 점은 변함이 없습니다. 현재 컬럼비아 MBA에서는 Full-Time MBA를 8월 Entry와 1월 Entry로 나눠서 운영하고 있습니다. 8월 Entry는 여름 인턴십까지 포함된 20개월 과정이고, 1월 Entry는 여름 인턴십이 제외된 16개월 과정입니다. 한 클래스의 인원은 대략 800여명으로 8월 Entry는 600여명, 1월 Entry는 200여명입니다. 추가로 다양한 Dual Degree 프로그램도 있으니 참고해보세요:)

커리큘럼 및 프로그램

컬럼비아 MBA Full-Time은 원칙적으로 2년 동안 4학기를 다니게 됩니다. 18학점의 필수과목과 최소 42학점의 선택과목으로 이뤄져 있습니다. 학생들은 보통 한 학기에 15학점을 듣습니다. 참고로 한 학기 최소 학점은 12학점, 최대 학점은 18학점입니다. 핵심 과목은 2개의 Full-Term Courses와 8개의 Half-Term Courses로 이뤄져 있습니다. 첫 번째 학기에는 Financial Accounting을 Full-Term Courses로 그 외에 Foundations of Valuation, Managerial Statistics, Corporate Finance 등, 총 8과목을 Half-Term Courses로 듣게 됩니다. 그 이후 두 번째 학기에서는 Operations Management를 Full-Term Courses로 듣게 됩니다. 거기에 더해 다양한 Electives를 듣게 됩니다. 이러한 수업들은 탄탄한 이론적 기반과 Case Study를 통한 실용적인 수업을 지향합니다.

컬럼비아 경영대학원은 300개 이상의 선택 과목(Electives)을 제공합니다. 학생들은 자신의 적성과 진로에 맞는 선택 과목을 수강함으로써 자신의 전문성을 더 갈고 닦을 수 있습니다. 금융, 컨설팅, 헬스 케어, 마케팅, 미디어 등 학생들의 진로에 맞춘 Career Path를 제공합니다. 대표적으로 Analytics in Action, The Economics and Politics of Digital Disruption, Financial Statement Analysis & Valuation 등이 학생들의 수요가 많은 선택 과목입니다.

합격생 DATA

(2023년 기준) 합격생들은 평균적으로 5년의 경력을 가지고 있었습니다. 중위 80%의 경우 3년에서 8년까지의 경력을 보유하고 있습니다. GMAT 평균은 729점이고, 550~780점 사이로 Range가 형성되어 있습니다. 중위 80%는 700~760점에 위치하고 있습니다.

(2024년 기준) GMAT 점수의 Median은 730점이고, 중위 80%의 Range는 700~760점이었습니다. 학부 학점의 평균은 3.5였고 마찬가지로 중위 80%의 Range는 3.2~3.9였습니다. 업무 경력은 평균이 5년이었고, 중위 80%의 경우 3~8년이었습니다. 평균 나이는 28세이지만 Range는 22~40세로 다양합니다. 합격생들의 산업별 Background를 살펴보면, 파이낸스가 29%, 컨설팅이 21%, Marketing/Media가 12%, Tech가 11%였습니다.

에세이 질문

컬럼비아 MBA는 앞서 언급한 대로 8월 Entry와 1월 Entry가 나뉘어져 있습니다. 8월 Entry의 경우 3개의 라운드로 구성되어 있습니다. 지원할 때 온라인 원서, Resume, 성적증명서, GMAT/GRE 점수, TOEFL/IELTS 성적표, 에세이, 추천서 등을 제출해야 합니다.

지원자들은 에세이 3개를 써야 합니다. 각각의 질문은 다음과 같습니다.

Essay 1

Through your resume and recommendation, we have a clear sense of your professional path to date. What are your career goals over the next three to five years and what is your long-term dream job? (500 words)

Essay 2

The Phillips Pathway for Inclusive Leadership (PPIL) is a co-curricular program designed to provide students with the skills and strategies needed to develop as inclusive leaders. Through various resources and programming, the goal is for students to explore and reflect during their educational journey on the following five inclusive leadership skills: Mitigating Bias and Prejudice; Managing Intercultural Dialogue; Addressing Systemic Inequity; Understanding Identity and Perspective Taking; and Creating an Inclusive Environment.

Describe a time or situation when you had the need to utilize one or more of these five skills, and tell us the actions you took and the outcome.(250 words)
